Nashik NMC corporators gulp down tea worth Rs. 70 Lakhs
RTI query exposes what the people’s representatives actually do
AAP members have appealed the residents to demand information from the government offices. They said that the citizens have right to demand information regarding the expense by any government offices. The members appealed the citizens for contacting district secretary Mukund Beni, Jagbir Singh and Swapnil Ghiya for any assistance or guidance.
On one hand, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) is claiming to have insufficient funds for the development works, but at the same time the administration is doing precious little to stop the corporators who are spending millions of rupees on just tea, refreshments and bouquets. An RTI query exposed that last year the NMC corporators had utilized Rs 70 lakh funds on just tea and other refreshment articles.
The local unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had earlier filed an application under the Right to Information Act (RTI) and sought information about the expenditures on tea parties in the NMC. When the AAP workers received reply to their query, they were shocked to see that how NMC corporators had made the administration spend huge funds on tea and refreshment articles. In every general body meeting (GBM) NMC provides tea and refreshment articles to the corporators and officers. Though these things look trivial considering the huge amount – Rs 70 lakh – certain restrictions are needed to be taken.
During April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013 NMC corporators had gulped down tea worth Rs 4, 05,477 and relished refreshment articles worth Rs 47, 67,740. During this period, NMC corporators spend Rs 18, 32,826 on garlands and bouquets.
The AAP members said that if the NMC could utilize million rupees on such “trivial” things then it is beyond imagination that how much funds the administration might be spending for the national and international tours of the corporators and officers.
Meanwhile commenting on this issue, mayor Adv Yatin Wagh claimed that the RTI inquiry by AAP members itself is politically motivated. Echoing his voice, the Opposition leader Sudhakar Badgujar raised doubts on the authenticity of the information.
He claimed that such huge expenditure is not possible and inquiry of the person who had forwarded the report should be made.

Distribution of NMC Nashik Water Tax bills in 2014
Due to various reasons, the citizens could not get the Water Tax bills in time last year. As a result, citizens had expressed their dissatisfaction about the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) administration and it had also affected the recovery by the NMC. Against the backdrop, the NMC administration has decided to distribute the Water Tax bills from April itself this time.
The NMC distributes Property Tax bills once a year whereas Water Tax bills are distributed in four phases – after every three months. Last year, the NMC did not distribute the bills in time. As a result, the citizens were given the bills for the whole year once and without recording the water meter readings. Therefore, citizens had lodged complaints over the issue and the delay in distribution had affected the recovery by NMC.
Last year, the NMC had Rs 105 crore target for Property Tax collection. Out of it, Rs 71.75 crore were recovered. There was Rs 60.54 crore Water Tax recovery target. Out of it, Rs 34.35 crore were recovered.
As per the NMC administration, due to additional responsibility of various works such as economic census, general census and voters list for Lok Sabha elections given to Property Tax, Water Tax employees, there was delay in distribution of the bills. However, due to the problems last year, the NMC has made preparation to recover Water Tax from April itself. Therefore, distribution of Water Tax bills will begin soon; NMC sources informed. Deputy commissioner Bahiram has also informed that citizen will get Water Tax bills on time this year.
